Hampshire Christmas Markets You Can’t Miss

Dec 4, 2017

There’s no time more special than Christmas. The music, food, lights and company all make this time of year the most exciting of all, with plenty of events cropping up that you won’t want to miss out on. One of these seasonal events includes Christmas markets, which transform towns across the country into wintery wonderlands. This is no different for Hampshire Christmas markets, and to make sure you don’t miss out we’ve included our top picks right here.

Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market & Ice Rink

Claiming the title of one of the best in Europe, the Winchester market tops the list of our Hampshire Christmas Markets. Winchester maintains that it’s the Christmas capital of England and with a real ice rink present, we’re not going to disagree!

There’s over 100 wooden chalets offering their own festive products, whether that’s gifts or foodie treats. There are also decorations perfect for the home and mulled drinks to warm you up as you enjoy the stalls. Each year the stall holders are individually selected by the Cathedral team, with the rotation of traders meaning there’s always something new on offer.

As well as this there is a strong emphasis on British artisanal items. Though you’ll undoubtedly find the European treats synonymous with a Christmas market, such as baklava and lebkuchen, you’ll be able to find the best of British, too. Running from the 20th of November until the 22nd of December this market is a must see. For more information see here.

Victorian Festival of Christmas at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

Running for a limited period of the 1st until the 3rd of December, this Victorian themed celebration is a novel way to approach seasonal festivities. Taking place at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, the festival features Victorian characters and entertainment suiting the era. You can also see Father Christmas and his reindeer friends, or even relax in Fagin’s tavern as carol singers fill the room with music.

There’s a great selection of museums and ships nearby too, meaning you’ll be entertained all day long with things to do. Tickets cost £12.50 per person with more details to be found here.

Southampton Christmas Market

Another of our top Hampshire Christmas Markets is the traditional German market held at Southampton. Featuring traditional and individually designed alpine chalets as stalls, this WELA Markte has unique items on offer as well as tasty foods. Here you can find bratwurst to fill you up as you walk around, as well as sweet and moreish waffles.

If you’re looking to buy things to gift then you can look forward to finding stalls stuffed to the brim with hand-made gingerbread hearts, candied fruit, decorations, toys and more.

As well as this, each evening a ‘Flying Santa’ will take to the skies to fly over the city centre, injecting a little Christmas magic into every night.

Running from the 11th November until the 23rd of December, the market is open from 10 in the morning until 8 at night every day. The official website can be found here.

Are there any other Hampshire Christmas Markets that you’ll be attending this year? We hope these options are making your list now!
